Lately, everywhere I turn (other foodie blogs, the AJC, Atlanta Magazine, etc.), I keep hearing about Community Q BBQ. Wanting to delve deeper into the hype, I headed there for a Saturday afternoon lunch. Suprisingly this new restaurant is nestled in with some of my favorites such as Athens Pizza House and Pyng Ho Chinese Restaurant. Despite all the reviews I've read, the lack of space was never mentioned. Let me just say for the record space is tight and the tables are usually full inside and out, weather permitting. The line can also get long as this is counter service only, although I found the wait staff on the floor accomodating, especially a motherly waitress that jokingly inplored some customers to come back soon so she could keep her job.
Ok, so on to the food. I ordered the St. Louis Ribs 1/2 rack with collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The ribs were perfectly smoked but not saucy enough for me. The sauces on the table had a strange taste. They were not the tangy sweet and spicy BBQ sauces I prefer. The greens also had unique flavor. They were tender but would of benefited from being flavored by some of that perfectly smoked meat. And finally the macaroni and cheese was good but a little too rich and cheesy (if that's possible). I also was able to sample some coleslaw which was on point, just the right amount of tang, sweetness and crunch. The Brunswick Stew was pretty good too. And the baked beans where meaty, sweet and delicious!
All and all a decent BBQ place. Signs posted, alerted customers to the fact they sometimes run out of meat, so come early and hungry. Once Community Q hits its stride they will be a formidable contender in the Atlanta BBQ scene.
