This past Sunday in the AJC (02-28-10), I read an interesting article by food critic John Kessler discussing the perceived responsibility by one of his readers of food writers to write about more healthy topics. Kessler diplomatically spread out the responsibility to both reader and writer but is it really a shared responsibility? Who wants to read about the latest microbiotic restaurant or 20 ways to make tofu? Granted there are some new, intriguing and healthy food topics out there but when it comes to reading about food, the exciting stuff is usually covered in fat, sugar and other equally unhealthy things. Food writers need to write about their passion, whether it be tofu or cheesecake and food readers need to exercise good judgement in what they choose to put in their mouths. So yes, occasionally I will blog about a great new meat substitute or cooking with quinoa but I will also euphorically report on the best fried chicken or dark chocolate truffles or vegetables cooked with pork. I will trust you gentle reader, to exercise discretion with what you both eat and read.
