Taqueria La Oaxaquena
AJC has been giving so much buzz to this Mexican eatery not far from my home, that I finally decided to give it a try and I was not disappointed. My dining companions and I shared a Oaxaca Tlayuda with chorizo sausage and we each had a tamale, mine with chicken and green chile, my companion's made with pork and a gloriously hot red chile sauce. The Tlayuda is best described as a Mexican pizza, a gigantic, thin tortilla covered with refried beans, Mexican chorizo, lettuce, tomato, radishes, avocado and "Oaxaca-style" string cheese. This is a hearty and wonderful change from traditional Mexican fare. The chorizo was not greasy (a problem I've encountered more than once) and the toppings screamed fresh. Dotted with a particularly spicy salsa from the salsa bar it was heaven in each bite. Oh but the tamales have me plotting my return. Masa spiced just right, tender bits of chicken and mild green chilies in every bite-mmmmm! I coveted the pork tamale though. Again masa spiced just right, tender bits of pork and a piquant, lip tingling red chilie sauce that was captivating! We ended the meal with a delicious slice of flan, which was a creamy and sweet ending to luxurious dining experience. It was like being plopped in the middle of a busy Mexican street and going from street cart to street cart savoring the local delicacies. I can't even imagine comparing it to former favorite Mexican spot which obviously caters to Gringo tastes. But enough already, next time besides a pork tamale, I'll be ordering up some of that luscious looking grilled corn with lime butter and I'll probably unearth some more Mexican jewels as well.
